The Curious Case of Zion Wilson: Philadelphia’s Intriguing UDFA Signing
The Philadelphia Eagles have officially signed former East Carolina interior defensive lineman Zion Wilson. The 23-year-old may have been one of the most intriguing undrafted free agents on the open market. Yet the craziest part is that many on the outside didn’t even realize that Wilson was available at all.
After spending five seasons at East Carolina and graduating with a BSAA in management, it was reported that Wilson was entering the transfer portal on January 8, 2026. Just four days later, Wilson reportedly committed to the University of Virginia and planned to play for the Cavaliers next season. Two weeks ago, Wilson concluded a two-week stint as a Wealth Management Intern with Wells Fargo in New York.
Yet fast forward to June 3, 2026 and Wilson’s waiver for a sixth year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA. Therefore, Wilson was suddenly unable to return to college and was forced to go pro. While it remains unclear how many NFL teams pursued Wilson, he reportedly signed a deal with Philadelphia the day after his waiver was denied. It appears as though that the Eagles kept a close eye on Wilson throughout the entire process this offseason…and it’s easy to see why.
Wilson walked on at East Carolina in 2021 as a former offensive lineman and defensive lineman at Northside high school. He didn’t see the field during his first two seasons, as he continued to develop as an offensive lineman. Yet Wilson got his chance to contribute in 2023, as he played on special teams and a handful of snaps at right guard.
In 2024, Wilson made the move to interior defensive lineman for the Pirates. He logged 13 snaps on defense, while also playing eight snaps as a fullback on offense. At 6’3” and 319 lbs., Wilson began to showcase his unique blend of size and versatility. Yet the best was yet to come in Wilson’s fifth season with the Pirates.
In 2025, Wilson enjoyed a breakout campaign as he dominated along East Carolina’s defensive front. Wilson played 458 defensive snaps and recorded 29 total pressures, including six sacks, according to Pro Football Focus. Despite primarily playing nose tackle, Wilson was able to be disruptive again both the run and the pass.
After being denied a sixth year of eligibility, Wilson will now look to carry that momentum into the NFL. He’ll enter an interior defensive line room that is lacking proven depth in Philadelphia, which could be just the opportunity that Wilson needs. The Eagles reportedly signed Wilson to a deal that includes $225,000 in total guaranteed money and a $25,000 signing bonus, which ranks near the top of Philadelphia’s undrafted free agent class in 2026.
While some may question if Wilson is ready for the next level, he could lean on his family for guidance. Wilson is the nephew of two East Carolina greats in former NFL defensive lineman C.J. Wilson and former NFL offensive lineman Willie Smith. Wilson is also the cousin of defensive end Ethan Wilson, a three-star recruit who has committed to join the Pirates. Therefore, it’s clear that the football bloodlines run deep in the Wilson family.
Yet somehow, Wilson managed to slip through the cracks in the 2026 NFL Draft due to his uncertain future. Dane Brugler of The Athletic publishes “The Beast” ahead of each NFL Draft and this year’s version included 2,709 prospects…yet Wilson wasn’t one of them. Brugler is as thorough of an evaluator as there is and even he was unsure of Wilson’s status during the pre-draft process.
Now the 23-year-old offensive lineman-turned-fullback-turned defensive lineman finds himself in the City of Brotherly Love. Wilson joins a top heavy defensive line room that is begging for young, talented depth to emerge. Could Wilson surprise and earn a spot on Philadelphia’s 53-man roster or practice squad? We’ll see. But he clearly seems like an intriguing prospect that is worth taking a chance on.
