Jalen Hurts Working With Former Eagles QB Coach Scot Loeffler
Following an early playoff exit, the Philadelphia Eagles revamped their coaching staff this offseason. After hiring first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, the Eagles made several other changes to the staff around him. One of those changes was the departure of Eagles quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler, who spent just one season in Philadelphia.
Loeffler left his position as the head coach at Bowling Green State University to make the leap to the NFL and lead Philadelphia’s quarterback room. While the team decided to move in a different direction this offseason and promote Parks Frazier to quarterbacks coach, it’s clear that Loeffler made a lasting impression on Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts.
In a recent post on Instagram (@jalenhurts on Instagram), Hurts shared several pictures of his offseason training. Yet one picture immediately stood out to me upon swiping through the post. Hurts shared a picture of him training with, you guessed it, former Eagles quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler.
Hurts normally works in the offseason with well-known quarterback developer Quincy Avery, yet Loeffler is seemingly lending a hand now too. This is especially notable given that Hurts was recently labeled as a player that is “not the most coachable” by an anonymous team source in an article published by ESPN. If Hurts was truly so difficult to coach, why would his former quarterbacks coach help him after being fired by the Eagles? It doesn’t make sense.
It’s also worth repeating that Hurts spoke highly of Loeffler when asked about the team’s then quarterbacks coach in December. Anyone that follows the Eagles likely knows that Hurts doesn’t go out of his way to praise other players or coaches. Yet that’s exactly what he did when asked about Loeffler.
“Overall coaching points and the value he’s brung, the perspective he’s brought and the knowledge of the game,” Hurts said. “A lot of wisdom in the game. He’s coached the best of ‘em. He’s been around it. He’s called games before so just his perspective has been very valuable for me. His process and structured way of thinking has been very influential, so hopefully we can keep him around.”
Despite Hurts publicly stating that he hoped to keep Loeffler around, the franchise went in a different direction. Yet Philadelphia’s decision won’t stop Hurts from working with Loeffler, as the star quarterback is seemingly continuing to work with his former quarterbacks coach this offseason. Given the recent narrative that has been pushed about Hurts, it’s pretty cool to see him subtly jab back at the reports.
