Five Below: 5 Free Agent Safety Options for the Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have failed to make a significant addition at safety this offseason. After watching Reed Blankenship walk in free agency, Philadelphia re-signed Marcus Epps and drafted Cole Wisniewski on day three of the 2026 NFL Draft. It’s fair to say that many Eagles fans are underwhelmed by Philadelphia’s current situation at safety ahead of OTAs.

Yet there is still plenty of time for Eagles general manager Howie Roseman to make an addition at the position. One of my daughter’s favorite stores is Five Below, a discount store that often has some surprisingly good items. Therefore, I figured it would be fun to take a look at the potential discounted options at safety that are still available this offseason.

Philadelphia currently has just one open roster spot, yet the Eagles could create a few more in the coming weeks. Philadelphia is expected to trade star wide receiver A.J. Brown early next month and Brandon Graham’s contract is also set to expire in June, although a return seems likely for the 38-year-old veteran. Here are five free agent safeties for the Eagles to consider.

Taylor Rapp

Former second-round pick safety Taylor Rapp has played nearly 5,000 defensive snaps since being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. After signing with the Buffalo Bills in 2023, Rapp played all over Sean McDermott’s defense. Yet a bothersome knee injury that he tried to play through cut Rapp’s season short in 2025, as he only started six games before being placed on injured reserve.

Now the 28-year-old safety is still available in free agency ahead of OTAs. New Eagles secondary coach Mike Pellegrino was with Rapp in Buffalo last season and could provide added insight into the type of player that he is, both on and off the field. Rapp has started 74 games across seven seasons and would bring some much-needed experience to Philadelphia’s safety room.

Ashtyn Davis

Eagles senior vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas was the general manager of the New York Jets when they selected safety Ashtyn Davis in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Philadelphia has brought in several players that Douglas drafted in New York, including Michael Carter II and Elijah Moore. Davis could be next as he would potentially provide Philadelphia with another solution at safety.

While Davis has been plagued by minor injuries throughout his career, he started a career-high 12 games and played over 700 snaps for the Miami Dolphins last season. Davis signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Dolphins last season and could settle for a similar deal of less this offseason. If that’s the case, I could see Philadelphia bringing in another player that Douglas may vouch for.

Ifeatu Melifonwu

Roseman loves taking a chance on former relatively high draft picks and Ifeatu Melifonwu was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. If his name sounds familiar, his older brother Obi Melifonwu lit up the 2017 NFL Draft Combine and had a short stint with the Eagles in 2021. Now fast forward to 2026 and Ifeatu could also land in Philadelphia.

Similar to Davis, Melifonwu started a career-high eight games for the Dolphins last season, including 549 snaps. At 6’2 1/2”, 205 lbs. with explosive athletic testing, Melifonwu would bring unique size to Philadelphia’s safety room. He also offers positional versatility, as he has played over 200 snaps at outside cornerback, slot cornerback, deep safety and box safety across five seasons in the NFL.

Kenny Moore II

The Indianapolis Colts attempted to shop veteran slot cornerback Kenny Moore II in trade talks, yet eventually released him after failing to find any takers. Yet one interesting note about his release is that Adam Schefter of ESPN referred to Moore as a safety, despite the 32-year-old only playing 58 career snaps at the position in the NFL. At 5’9” and 190 lbs, Moore has primarily played slot cornerback.

It’s worth noting that Philadelphia is reportedly going to give Michael Carter II a look at safety this season, who has also primarily played slot cornerback in the NFL. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is familiar with Moore due to their time together in Indianapolis and would likely vouch for the veteran addition. If Moore is truly interested in moving to safety, I could see the Eagles giving him the opportunity to do so in 2026.

Jalen Mills

The Eagles selected defensive back Jalen Mills in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Mills has carved out a decade-long career in the NFL, as he continues to showcase his versatility in the secondary. Could a return to Philadelphia make sense for both sides as the Eagles look to add help at safety?

At 32-years old, it’s clear that Mills’ best days as a player are behind him. Yet he has ties to several executives and coaches in Philadelphia. Pellegrino was with Mills for three seasons in New England. Douglas brought Mills to the Jets in 2024. Jerrod Johnson was with Mills on the Houston Texans last season. There are plenty of touch points with Mills to keep in mind and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him return to Philadelphia this offseason.
