Eagles-Packers Game Preview: Who Will Win in Week 10?

The Philadelphia Eagles enjoyed a much-needed bye week after wining back-to-back games to revive the vibes in the City of Brotherly Love. Now the Eagles will try to showcase their new-look defense against the Green Bay Packers on Monday night.

The Packers are coming off an embarrassing loss to the Carolina Panthers and will surely be fired up for a primetime matchup with the Eagles. Green Bay dropped both games to Philadelphia last season and needs a win to continue their fight for the top spot in the NFC.

Here’s my full game preview for a pivotal NFC matchup in Week 10.

Three Storylines To Follow

Who Will the Eagles Start at CB?

After dealing with injuries at cornerback through the first half of the regular season, Philadelphia is nearing full health. Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio could have a full repertoire of eight different cornerbacks to work with in Week 10, including former Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander.

While Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are obviously starters, the Eagles have utilized a revolving door at outside cornerback opposite of Mitchell in nickel and dime looks. Adoree’ Jackson, Kelee Ringo and Jakorian Bennett have each spent time at that spot this season.

There doesn’t seem to be a clear leader for the job quite yet, which could leave the door open for Alexander to claim the spot in Philadelphia. It’ll be interesting to see how the situation plays out on Monday night in Green Bay.

Can Brett Toth Do It Again?

I’ll be the first to admit that I was wrong about Eagles backup offensive lineman Brett Toth. While he struggled earlier in the regular season, Toth looked like a natural against the Nee York Giants in Week 8, as he filled in for Cam Jurgens as Philadelphia’s starting center.

With Jurgens out for Monday night, can Toth replicate his success against the Packers? We’ll see. While Toth looked far more comfortable against the Giants, I would be lying if I said I was 100% confident in him going against Green Bay’s defensive front on the road.

Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley likes to mix things up and will surely test Toth early and often. Green Bay’s defensive tackle duo of Devonte Wyatt and Karl Brooks is underrated and could give Toth issues upfront.

Philadelphia’s New-Look Pass Rush

Despite retiring on October 13th, Za’Darius Smith still somehow leads all of Philadelphia’s edge rushers with 1.5 sacks this season. Yet that should change when the Eagles debut their new look edge rusher group on Monday night.

The Eagles could be adding three players on the edge in Green Bay, as Jaelan Phillips, Nolan Smith and Brandon Graham might play in Week 10. Phillips was Philadelphia’s biggest acquisition at the trade deadline and will surely look to make a big impact under the bright lights of Monday Night Football.

While Philadelphia’s pass rush was underwhelming in the first half of the regular season, things could change moving forward. The Eagles could look to attack Packers left tackle Rasheed Walker, who has allowed the most sacks (3) and pressures (20) on the team this season.

Two Underrated Players To Watch For

Tank Bigsby

After losing his job as Philadelphia’s kickoff returner, Tank Bigsby exploded onto the scene as RB2 in Week 8. Bigsby ran all over the Giants with nine carries for 104 rushing yards. It was clear that Bigsby provided a much-needed spark behind Saquon Barkley in Philadelphia’s backfield.

While the Packers have been stout against the run, they have showed weaknesses against the outside run at times. Panthers running back Rico Dowdle had his way with the Packers last week and Bigsby could break off a few big runs in Green Bay on Monday night.

Luke Musgrave

The Packers are dealing with a big loss as starting tight end Tucker Kraft suffered a season-ending knee injury last week. Yet people shouldn’t sleep on his likely replacement, former second-round pick Luke Musgrave.

The 25-year-old tight end showed promise during his rookie season but has dealt with several injuries since then. Now Musgrave will have a chance to be TE1 in Green Bay once again and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make a few plays against the Eagles.

One Key Matchup To Monitor

Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson vs. Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary

Philadelphia’s offensive tackle duo of Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson is likely the top pairing in the NFL. Mailata has allowed just one sack this season, while Johnson has pitched a shutout. Yet both players will be put to the test against Green Bay’s edge rusher duo.

Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary have already combined for 14 sacks this season. While Hafley has moved both players around at times, it’ll be up to Mailata and Johnson to shut them down in Week 10. Will Jeff Stoutland leave his offensive tackle duo on an island in Green Bay? We’ll find out on Monday night.

Final Score Predictions

Josh’s Pick: Eagles 27, Packers 17

Amazingly the Packers are favored by 2.5 points despite the Eagles coming off the bye week and clearly being the healthier team. Plus, Nick Sirianni is 4-0 in the first game following the bye week and Jalen Hurts is 9-0 versus the NFC North as a starter. Obviously Green Bay will be motivated after the embarrassment against the Panthers last week but Philly has too much firepower.

Anthony’s Pick: Eagles 27, Packers 20

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is 4-0 in games following a bye week. Jalen Hurts is 9-0 as a starting quarterback against the NFC North. While the Packers are viewed as one of the top teams in the conference, I expect the Eagles to extend both of those streaks on Monday night. Philadelphia understands how important this matchup is for potential playoff seeding and will be on point following a much-needed week off.
